Patients: 57 patients (mean age 60 y, 100% men) who presented within 7 days of onset of an acute attack of gout (American College of Rheumatology criteria for acute arthritis of gout), with presence of monosodium urate crystals on arthrocentesis of the primary joint. Exclusion criteria included secondary gout; tophaceous gout; current use of anticoagulants or use of steroids, colchicine, allopurinol, chemotherapy, or immunosuppressive therapy in the past 6 months; recent serum creatinine level > 1.3 mg/dL (114.9 μmol/L); or history of heart failure.
